About Us

The Layton Surfers Swim Team is a USA Swimming sanctioned competitive swimming team and is affiliated with Utah Swimming. The Layton Surfers practice at the Layton City Surf’n Swim and compete within the Intermountain area. The Layton Surfers Swim Team is an age group swim team with members ranging from 5-19 years old. The team has swimmers ranging from beginners to state champions. The experienced coaching staff creates an atmosphere of excellence where the potential within each swimmer is refined.

The Layton Surfers Swim Team originated in the 1970’s at Hill Air Force Base and was known as the Hill Flyers Swim Team. When the Layton City Surf’n Swim opened in 1987, the team moved to this new facility, changed its name and has continued as one of the premier age group competitive swimming teams in northern Utah.

We believe swimming to be the best youth sport in the world. The network of people you and your child meet could very well become lifelong friends. We believe that these friendships along with the fact that your child will be learning life skills while gaining a higher level of fitness, really makes swimming the best youth sport in the world. Swimmers continue to reap the benefits of swimming long after their participation ends.

Coaches

Royal Hafen
Royal is currently on an extended recruiting trip to Zurich, Switzerland. Royal swam for the Surfers Swim Team and Layton High School from 2001 to 2003. He was team captain his senior year of high school and swam butterfly and the 200 IM. His hobbies include swimming, drafting, dancing and biking. Royal is an excellent teacher, coach and mentor and we await his return from his dedicated service.

Craig Bjorklund
“Coach” Bjorklund started his coaching career in England while serving with the United States Air Force. He continued his coaching career in Maine and Utah, due to military transfers. Upon arrival in Utah in 1979, Coach took over both the Hill Flyers Swim Team, as well as the Layton High School Swim Team. Through his efforts, the Layton Surfers Swim Team was created and has continued to grow year after year. Over the years, both the male and female swimmers for the Layton High School Swim Team have earned over 15 Region Championships. Layton High School Swimming continues its excellence. In addition to his coaching, he established the professional aquatic programs (Lifeguarding, Water Safety Instructor and CPR & First Aid) at the Surf’n Swim. Coach is one of three “lead” instructors for the State of Utah for the American Red Cross Aquatic Safety Programs. He is also a full time faculty member at Layton High School.

Kristine Dukes
Kristine swam competitively with the Layton Surfers for ten years and with the Layton High School Swim team for four of those years. During her high school career, Kristine earned consideration All-American status, broke many school records and took second in state in the 100 Butterfly. She also served as Team Captain with the High School. She is married to Josh Dukes, coach of Highland High School and Fairmont Aquatic Swim Teams, and they have two beautiful daughters. In 2005, Kristine was the Assistant Utah Zone coach and in 2006 will be the Head Utah Zone coach. Kristine continues to develop the potential within each individual swimmer, thus shaping our team for the future.

Kyle Kofoed
Kyle began swimming at the age of six in El Centro, California. At the age of eight, Kyle moved to Layton and swam for the Clearfield Phantoms. In 1985, Kyle transferred to the Layton Surfers Swim Team and swam under the direction of Coach Bjorklund. As an age group swimmer, Kyle enjoyed the traveling, competition and friendships with many other swimmers who have become lifelong friends. Kyle enjoyed much success in the Freestyle events setting state and team records and winning events at Western Zones. Kyle swam for four years at Layton High School and won several individual state titles and helped his team place second in state in 1992-1993. Kyle attended and swam for the University of Utah for three years and currently runs the Layton Master’s Swim Club.

Randy Christensen
Randy began swimming for Layton High School in 1995. He enjoyed both backstroke and distance freestyle events. Randy served as a Team Captain his Senior year and was an excellent team leader. Randy became a Layton Surfers Swim coach in 1998 and joined the Layton High School coaching staff in 2001. Randy has also been the Assistant Utah Zones Swim Coach in 2003 and 2004. He has served in various positions on the Utah Swimming Board including: Technical Planning Chair, Volunteer Coordinator for the 2005 Western Zone Championships held in Salt Lake City and attended the national USAS convention. Randy excels in establishing personal relationships among team members. Due to Randy’s current “twitterpatted” state, he has announced his impending departure from single status to join the ranks of holy matrimony. We wish him the best with his newfound ball and chain.

Char Hafen
Following in his brother Royal’s footsteps, Char began swimming with the Layton Surfers Swim Team at age 12. He is currently a member of the Layton High School Swim Team and served as Team Captain his Sophomore year. Char teaches technique to our beginning swimmers through frequent one-on-one, in water coaching. We expect great things from Char in the years to come.
